Earth Sciences for Society - an International Year of Planet EarthOrganised under the auspices of IUGS The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) represents about 250,000 Earth scientists in 117 countries. These men and women constitute, in living form, the largest database of information about the past and present status of planet Earth that has ever existed. Within this Union and its affiliated organisations, specialists in many disciplines come together to share results of their research on rocks, fossils, glaciers and sediments in order to: interpret both the history of the Earth use that knowledge as a basis for forecasting likely future events. The extent to which Earth's systems impinge on our daily lives and, in turn, to which our activities to interfere with those delicately balanced systems is a matter of global concern. To focus on the positive aspects of this relationship, and demonstrate how geoscientists are the key players in creating a sustainable future for humans and their planet, IUGS is to proclaim an International Year of Planet Earth PDF en Français là : Année mondiale des Sciences de la Terre.
